The pursuit of musical excellence teaches  students to strive for excellence in all areas of their lives.

Musica Franklin is modeled on El Sistema, a hugely successful music and social change program for  youth development that was started in Venezuela 40 years ago and is now practiced all over the world, helping to lift up children  and their families.

Our after-school program, which started in  September 2015, is open to all Franklin County children age 7-13.   We currently teach at Sheffield Elementary School in Turners Falls Monday  through Thursday, and at Leyden Woods in Greenfield Tuesday through Thursday.

We actively recruit students through presentations at  schools and subsidized housing communities, and through referrals from school  counselors and social service agencies. These youth, who suffer the effects of  poverty, are resilient, curious, and eager to learn.

Musica Franklin is free for all students. There are no  fees, auditions, or other barriers to participation.

Family participation is important!  Our monthly Family Nights include an informal student performance and a  presentation by a professional musician, followed by pizza for  all.

Current research shows music  education positively affects brain development and improves academic performance  and social and professional skills. Musica Franklin does that, and more. Our  program also teaches discipline, responsibility, collaboration toward a common  goal, standards of excellence, and community  engagement.

Your support will help hire an additional violin teacher, rent 24 more violins, and help pay for transportation to performances and community engagement activities. We greatly appreciate any contribution towards sustaining and expanding our program!
