"I can't believe I get to do this again tomorrow night!"

Those were the excited words an 11-year-old boy shouted backstage last November on opening night of High School Musical.

Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theatre (MVCCT) has been a major theatre arts presence in northern Virginia since 1980. From classics such as The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, and Much Ado About Nothing to the more contemporary such as Willy Wonka, The Pink Panther, and High School Musical, our full-scale productions allow children ages 8 to 18 to perform on stage and work behind the scenes with professional directors, musicians, and choreographers. Our three productions per season include up to 45 children on stage and draw hundreds of audience members of all ages at each show.
 
And this isn’t the only way we serve the community…

 “I have a whole bunch of friends that really really want to do your program.  I’ve always wanted to be in a musical because I love to sing and dance.” 

That quote came to MVCCT in a letter from an 11-year-old boy asking us to bring a theater program to his school, where many parents cannot afford afterschool and extracurricular programs for their children. At many schools such as this one, MVCCT provides outreach programs. Through these free afterschool performing arts programs, children sing, dance, act, and improvise under the guidance of skilled theater teachers — without even realizing they are building self-confidence, character, and responsibility.
 
In addition to no-cost outreach programs at schools with low-income populations, we also offer affordable afterschool programs at many other area elementary schools, and summer and spring break camps that serve northern Virginia families.
 
Reasonable ticket prices allow countless area families to enjoy the magic of live theatre. Ticket sales help defray the production and administrative costs of each show and to provide outreach programs and scholarships for deserving children, but they do not cover everything.
