Few know the challenges created by hunger, drought, job insecurity or loss like the Navajo. For those whose registered tribal home is in Rock Point, Arizona, the distance between home and help of any kind is 50 miles or more. For most, healthcare, jobs, groceries, farming supplies, and entertainment require a working vehicle, many gallons of fuel, travel food and a full day to gather the provisions needed for home and family.
For 70 years, Navajo Lutheran Mission (better known locally as Rock Point Mission) has partnered with the Navajo people to be an outpost of love and hope. Every day, the 100% Navajo staff feed the hungry, prioritize learning for grades K-3 and focus on fulfilling basic community needs.
We teach the way of Jesus, helping one another and stretching our capacity to become the people that God needs in this time and place.
"As a career teacher, my years at the Mission school were the most rewarding. I continue to focus my resources and challenge others to donate, so that bright and eager Navajo children can experience success and reach for goals of equality and opportunity. I feel there is no higher calling for humanity." Jane Gilwood, life-long teacher
"The Mission staff works with confidence and gratitude every day. They have to, because they are needed by so many within the community. Committed to recreating an environment defined by self-sufficiency, family structure, and cultural spirituality, they demonstrate the soul of "what it means to be Navajo."
