OUR MISSION

A nonprofit media center, The Nation Institute was established to extend the reach of progressive ideas and strengthen the independent press. Our dynamic range of programs include a bestselling book publishing imprint, Nation Books; our award-winning Investigative Fund, which supports groundbreaking investigative journalism; the widely read and syndicated website TomDispatch; our internship program at The Nation magazine; and Journalism Fellowships that fund up to 15 high-profile reporters every year. Work produced by The Nation Institute has sparked Congressional hearings, new legislation, FBI investigations and the resignation of government officials, has changed the debate and has a regular impact on the most urgent social and political issues of our day.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Your donations will help send our Investigative Fund reporters all over the world. In the last year alone we covered the health risks faced by deportees to Haiti; Qatar's vexed relationship with the Arab Spring; the damaging legacy of NAFTA; and Obama's secret drone war in Pakistan. We've investigated toxic burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan; US soldiers survive multiple combat tours only to die of exposure to these harmful chemicals at home. Thanks to John Wasik's probe of risky structured products that are peddled by brokers as "safe" investments, the SEC issued its first-ever warning about these financial instruments. Kai Wright exposed the traps set by payday lenders, while Ari Berman examined how the GOP ‘s redistricting is resegregating the South to ensure their party’s dominance.

With your support, Nation Books will continue to publish hard-hitting nonfiction such as The Speech, Senator Bernie Sanders’ historic filibuster against corporate greed; or The Uprising, John Nichols’ riveting account of Governor Walker’s war against collective bargaining rights that has galvanized ordinary Americans; and The Invisible Arab, Marwan Bishara’s exploration of the promise and peril of the revolutions sweeping North Africa and the Arab world.

Your help will allow TomDispatch to continue publishing essays by such leading voices as Barbara Ehrenreich, Steve Fraser, and Frances Fox Piven; and will also support the Institute's Fellowship program, which allows essential writers such as Jeremy Scahill, Chris Hedges, Katha Pollitt, Gary Younge the freedom to pursue their work, while also supporting emerging voices like those of Dana Goldstein and Jamelle Bouie. Finally, your contributions will help our Internship Program which each year supports 30 college students and recent graduates interested in magazine journalism and publishing.
