What makes NCR unique and increasingly vital today is its independent nature. While NCR is boldly Catholic, no bishop or religious order controls it.  It is an independent, lay-led, nonprofit news organization, and has been since its beginnings in 1964. It is that independence that separates it from other Catholic news publications.

 During its history NCR has gained wide acclaim among its peers and the wider public for its high professional standards. It has won the General Excellence award, the highest honor bestowed by the Catholic Press Association, for thirteen years in a row.
