The National Hand Dance Association (NHDA) preserves and supports the social culture and art form of DC Hand Dance, a swing style partner dance indigenous to the Nation's Capitol for over 60 years.  Han,d Dance is the Official Dance of the District of Columbia.  One of the important intiatives of NHDA is to introduce hand dance to young people. An important part of hand dance are the core values which impact the social development of young people during their formative years.  The core values include proper etiquette, self respect and respect for others, conflict resolution, good physical hygiene and appearance, exercise (in the fight against childhood obesity) and hand dance is fun. Young people feel empowered when embracing these core values, which can make them productive citizens. The Youth Hand Dance program has made a signifcant difference in the lives of at-risk youth in providing them a positive activity.
