The National Museum of Language is a small museum, yet powerful in its message and story of Language. The Museum is located in College Park, Maryland and opened to the public May 2008.  Dr. Amelia Murdoch, (shown above in the Museum with visiting linguist David Crystal) a linguist and leader of the founding group, planned and organized for ten years before presenting an Exhibit Team and exhibits to the public.  The Museum is the only museum of its kind in the US and only one of four museums in the world with a similar focus.  The National Museum of Language examines the history, impact and art of language and shows how language is used in society and the world.

The current exhibit "Writing Language: Passing It On" shows both alphabetic writing systems (Arabic, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew) and logographic writing systems (Chinese and Japanese).  In addition, the docents have language/culture specific Power Points, DVD’s/videos for Spanish, French, Cherokee, Amharic, and other languages.

The Museum has 3 small rooms which include a hands-on- “Activity Room.”  The Activity Room allows visitors to practice calligraphy, see technological presentations, touch artifacts and learn how to say “hello” in several languages.

A new exhibit is being added Mid-February, 2010 on ”The Emergence of American English” from British English during the 1812 War.

The Museum is appealing for ages 9 to 99 and is opened on Tuesdays and Saturdays, from 10 AM- 4 PM, and every first and third Sundays, 1 PM-4 PM.  The Museum is located at 7100 Baltimore Ave.– Suite 202/ College Park, Maryland 20721.
