Our organization works with tribes, conservation groups, educational institutions, landowners, and state and federal agencies to ensure the long-term protection of Native American cultural landscapes. As an inter-tribal non-profit, the NALC is committed to managing these landscapes in a manner that preserves their integrity and promotes an understanding of their value to California, Arizona, and Nevada tribes and their neighbors in the comm- nity at large.
Today, the NALC’s work is more important than ever as development continues in Imperial, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties in California. At the Old Woman Mountains Preserve in the heart of the Mojave Desert, the NALC conducts its Learning Landscapes Program that brings together tribal elders and youth to share knowledge and traditions of the area. The Preserve is now within the boundaries of the newly created Mojave Trails National Monument.
The NALC is taking an active role in working with other partners that support this designation to promote conservation measures and appropriate public access goals that will sustain these areas for many generations to enjoy. Just this past May, the NALC accepted Coyote Hole near Joshua Tree as its newest preserve, and it planning management and educational programs.
As we look ahead, we are excited to have a learning landscapes program in the spring with students of all ages and backgrounds!
