Who we are
Founded in 1995 by a group of Black female educators on a mission to fill the gap of supporting African American women and girls in North San Diego County, NCAAWA is dedicated to providing a support network through education, health awareness, and life skills programs for women and girls in San Diego North County to increase their self-sufficiency. NCAAWA's mission is achieved through providing higher education scholarships, youth mentorship, and a strong and dedicated membership that aids in social mobility for all women and girls in the community.
NCAAWA’s founders still play active and integrated roles in our organization, with three currently sitting on our board. Their endless participation helps to continue to steer us toward our mission and shows the passion and tenacity in furthering our mission as a pillar in the North San Diego County community.
What we do
We empower.
The North County African American Women’s Association Scholarship Program is designed to support the educational advancement of African American females in the community and students who have participated in an NCAAWA Mentoring programs.
We inspire.
Our Becoming a Global Citizen mentorship program allows students participate in a 10 week after school session each semester, focused on activities to develop leadership, public speaking, decision making, etiquette, and self sufficiency skills to enhance their personal growth and development.
The Global Ambassadors mentorship program aims to empower rising high school girls of color with leadership skills, financial literacy, and to increase knowledge of global issues that impact their social mobility.
We engage.
Our bi-annual Women's Conference provides education, collaboration, and fellowship for women in the community. Past event themes have been "Sister's Soaring Joyously" and "Live Well," focuses on mental, spiritual, and physical health and well-being.
Why we do it
Black women face the most adversity of any other demographic in the United States, whether it be in access to higher education, upward mobility in the workplace, access to support resources, and most specifically, in the discrimination we face. In 2022, Black women had the highest unemployment rate at 5.3%, higher than any other female groups of color in the US. NCAAWA aims to play a part in decreasing that number by increasing the social mobility of Black women in our community and growing the support network to include allyship.
