"The NSA was there every step of the way when we were planning a school garden at Beattie Elementary.
First they had a plan that would engage the imagination of our children. When we hired contractors, they suggested the questions we needed to ask. When it came time to plant, they were there with plants and their helpful guidance. When things went wrong they offered support and consolation. When the bills came due, they offered matching grants. Wow!
The Beattie Garden would not have been possible without the help of NSA. We cannot begin to to thank them for this treasure in our community." -Karen Creswell, Beattie Volunteer
What started almost 40 years ago as an effort of a small group of plant enthusiasts has evolved into an organization with an amazing impact on Nebraska’s community landscapes. We work to create beneficial landscapes that are good for the environment and for the people who live in it, whether we’re working with a local arboretum, a large municipal landscape project or nurturing a first-time gardener.
Our work focuses on plants, but it’s really about giving people the tools they need to improve the landscapes where they work, live and play. We educate people of all ages about beneficial landscapes.
We help individuals, municipalities, community groups and corporations make a difference by supporting landscape projects using good ecological principles. And we get native and underutilized plants into our landscapes that support pollinators and wildlife and offer essentials like shade and clean water.
NSA’s affiliate site network is unique in the nation. There are now 100 affiliated arboretums in 52 communities. Each of these arboretums is completely different and reflects the reality of Nebraska’s geographic and ecological diversity.
We received the “Urban Beautification Award” from the American Horticultural Society and other national recognition. More than 300 towns have received funding, plants and technical assistance for 1,300 landscape projects.
NSA educates, working with partners to implement workshops, training and other activities aimed at improving green space sustainability.
NSA relies solely on memberships, donations and grants to fund our programs.
