The Nebraska Writers Collective works in high schools, alternative high schools, prisons, community organizations, and professional organizations from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Ogallala, Nebraska.
We work to benefit students, teachers, and artists around the area, and this work takes a great amount of support to keep going.
Four programs make up the Nebraska Writers Collective. Our largest program is the Louder Than a Bomb: Great Plains Youth Poetry program, working in over 40 high schools in Nebraska and Iowa. We also support Spark Wheel Press, the Seven Doctors Project, and Writers On Loan.
Help us out, and let us know if you'd like to learn more about us and all that we do.
"The opportunity to have a professional poet come to my classroom and mentor several high school students was unforgettable for the individual students as well as the school community. The visiting poet from the Nebraska Writers Collective created and implemented constructivist, authentic, and individualized learning experiences for multiple students at the Integrated Learning Program, an alternative school for students with Behavioral and Learning Disabilities. Within a six week period, these struggling readers and hesitant writers transformed into eloquent, passionate poets and storytellers. The final product of this process was a small magazine, a treasured emblem of success as well as permanent proof of the potential that exists within these often-overlooked youth. -Rebecca Herskovitz, Special Education Teacher
“Getting up on that stage and seeing a crowd of expectant faces waiting for my poetry, I think that may be one of the best feelings in the world.”
-John Ratz, Student
