Nehemiah Sober Living was founded to provide safe structured housing for those in early recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Persons in early recovery are at high risk of relapse. Most do not have any place to go. They are either estranged from their families due to the legal and social issues attached to addiction, or their friends and families use drugs or alcohol making returning home unsafe. At this point in their lives most recovering addicts are in deep financial debt, out of work, and have few options available to them. Nehemiah Sober Living provides safe, clean, well-appointed homes. We provide regular drug testing, a house manager, financial counseling, and educational programs all designed to help our residents succeed. Our residents are expected to follow house rules, curfews, complete assigned chores, and attend a minimum of 4 recovery meetings per week. Once our residents are working they pay rent which helps offset the expenses of running our houses.
We currently rent two houses. Our goal is to buy all the houses we use as the expenses would be significantly less to own then to rent. Our new project is to purchase a house with a retail building for use as a thrift shop. The thrift shop will be a financial anchor for the expansion of the services we provide. The house will provide homes for up to 11 men.
The benefits of opening the thrift store are:
We currently have our homes set up to support themselves with the rent from the residents once they are able to obtain employment. We are the only sober living program in our county that accepts people who do not have the funds to get started but are willing to work.
Our waiting list is long and we have had to turn down so many men looking for help. The need for this programming is great. Covid-19 has negatively affected those struggling with addiction. Recovery groups such as AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), and NA (Narcotics Anonymous) stopped meeting in person and deaths from overdoses are nationally at an all-time high. Filling our houses are not the issue, coming up with the down payment is!
The societal benefits of this program go beyond the restoring of the lives of recovering addicts and their families. Their success in recovery reduces the drain on our legal system due to drug related crimes and saves our welfare system the cost of multiple 30-day inpatient treatment stays. It is a win win!
Our mission statement is "Providing safe structured housing for persons in recovery from the disease of addiction to give them the opportunity to rebuild their lives to be the people God called them to be." Please come along side us and be part of the solution.
