The Portland Neighborhood
In its early days, Portland was a bustling town that attracted a lot of business along the Ohio River. But today Portland faces significant challenges.
What We're Doing
Neighborhood House has focused on education for more than 118 years. The birthplace of Louisville’s first kindergarten is now home to four core programs that, together, deliver Life Needs, Life Skills and Life Dreams: the Child Development Center, the Youth Development Program, the Four Seasons Senior Program and Family Services.
Child Development Center
Provides children, ages six weeks through twelve years with a safe, nurturing learning environment.
How We Make a Difference:
- 100% of our non-special needs preschoolers graduate kindergarten ready compared to 55% across Jefferson County.
- Our low child-to-staff ratios, research-based curriculum and highly trained staff keep our children socially, emotionally and developmentally on track!
- Last year, 153 infants & preschoolers made developmental gains from our safe, affordable and educationally focused environment!
Youth Development Program
Provides children & teens with a positive alternative to the risky situation & environments prevalent in low-income neighborhoods like Portland.
How We Make a Difference:
- 85% of youth who come to Neighborhood House 3 or more times per week improve their grades and performance in school.
- Last year we served over 300 youth through our Youth Development Program!
- Youth member Kwanita says, "The staff believes in me and pushes me to pursue my dreams." Rikala participated in our job training program Cheers for Careers and is now working after school in our Child Development Center!
Four Seasons Senior Program
Improves the quality of life for some of our neighborhood's most vulnerable citzens - senior adults.
