$25,000 Goal

In March NBCT was  within days of opening our annual children’s production of Willy Wonka, Jr. when the shelter in place order became effective.  The production was scheduled and ready to perform for not only the public but for over 2,000 students from several counties to enhance visibility of the arts in education. With the latest extension of Phase Two from the Governor, NBCT has been forced to cancel or postpone 13 shows/events for the remainder of the year. This amounts to a $137,350 loss in production ticket revenue, and an estimated $15,000 revenue loss in special events was formed in 1968 and incorporated in the State of North Carolina in May of 1970.

For 52 years, NBCT, a 501(C)(3) non-profit community theater has contributed to the arts in Craven County with theatrical performances and education programs.  Our mission statement is “To enrich, empower, include, educate, and entertain” and although entertainment is the most visible part of our mission, it merely serves as a vehicle to accomplish our goals.

NBCT has a rich history of education and development of the youth in our community with our annual children’s show which performs for school age children from across several counties.  This collaboration with our educators offers the experience of live theater in a historic building.  NBCT is celebrating its 10th Anniversary of The Saax Bradbury Players; an all teen troupe that directs, produces, performs, and markets their own productions.  NBCT also works with children ages 8-15 every summer for the Next Generation Workshop that teaches children the fundamentals of theater and the value of teamwork, creative problem solving, self-confidence, diversity, and empathy.

Our organizaztion has also worked extensively to build a more diverse organization through our Black History Month program for the past 13 years and selects shows throughout the year that encourage people of all ethnicities to participate on stage, behind the scenes, and in leadership positions.   Productions such as The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, Miss Evers Boys, In the Heights, and Mulan have drawn diverse actors and audiences.  NBCT has been awarded grants through the Craven Arts Council and the NC Arts Council for its outreach programs over the past decade which have enhanced the programs efforts.

NBCT works closely with and supports our local schools, providing resources such as volunteers, equipment, rehearsal space, costumes, and sets. We believe that arts in education is valuable to the development of our youth and their future above and beyond the stage.  NBCT is currently working with JT Barber as consultants to revitalize their performing arts program and has assessed their auditorium and stage after it sustained damage from Hurricane Florence.  NBCT is also developing an after school program which will have our Saax Bradbury Players working with children at their school on drama.  NBCT has also worked with Craven Community College by providing an adult enrichment program in theater arts.

We need your help to raise money to help us continue the magic of live theater for another 52 years.  Our productions account for 80% of our revenue and since March we have been unable to open for performances which has impacted our finances.  Since we are unable to move forward with productions we are looking to disaster loans, grants, and reaching out to our patrons for support.  Any amount is greatly appreciated and you will receive a tax donation letter for your contribution.

Thank you for your support in keeping the performing arts alive in New Bern!
