As an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, our goal is to make New Milford more walkable and bicycle-friendly through education and awareness, advocating improvements along roadways (like crosswalks and lights, signage and sidewalks), and expanding a multi-purpose 55-mile regional greenway that follows the beautiful, scenic Housatonic and Still Rivers from Gaylordsville in the north, to Norwalk, CT in the south.
New Milford's planned section of greenway is 13-miles. The first five + miles are complete. The town has eight miles left to build. Completed sections include Sega Meadows Park, River Rd and Riverview Rd in the north, and the Riverwalk at Young's Field in the downtown area. New Milford's greenway will join with the Still River Greenway in Brookfield, continue to Danbury and connect with the Norwalk River Valley Trail which passes through Ridgefield, Redding, and Wilton and terminates at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. The 55-mile regional greenway, thanks to WestCOG, who secured both a Federal RAISE grant and DEEP CT Recreational Trails grant, is currently in its design phase. The greenway will provide local connectivity to several parks, a nature preserve, the historic downtown, shops, restaurants, a community center that houses social services, the Youth Agency and Parks & Recreation, and the business district along Pickett District Rd.
In Norwalk and Danbury, the regional greenway will connect to the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway which runs from Maine to Florida. In Danbury, the greenway will connect with the Maybrook Trailway, part of the 750-mile Empire State Trail running from Brewster to north to Canada and in Albany heading west to Buffalo, NY.
Our mission is to make New Milford more bicycle and pedestrian-friendly through education on safety and health benefits, support and improvements for trails, encouraging walking and bicycling with group events, and supporting community efforts that encourage walking and bicycling. One of our main focuses has been the envisioned 13-mile, town-length New Milford River Trail which follows the Housatonic and Still Rivers from Gaylordsville in the north, to the Brookfield town line in the south. This trail, when complete, will connect residents and visitors to our downtown area, local parks, industry, stores and restaurants and neighboring towns. It will provide a safer traveling alternative to Route 7, preserve the town's history along its route (which relied on the rivers), and be an economic driver for our town. We are an all-volunteer organization.
