SUPPORT EARLY LEARNING TEACHERS

START EARLY, START RIGHT

New Teacher Center’s Early Learning Initiative

New Teacher Center (NTC) launched its Early Learning Initiative to ensure that early learning teachers are able to provide our youngest learners with powerful education experiences and to close the achievement gap before it starts. NTC’s goal is to create a comprehensive professional learning system for teachers of our youngest learners to ensure that every three, four, and five-year-old student gets the right start, right from the beginning.

Since its founding in 1998, NTC has found that coaching support for all teachers is fundamental to improving the quality of instruction for teacher effectiveness and student success. NTC is building on its positive impact in the K–12 space to contextualize a system of support for Early Learning educators. As the national leader in teacher and principal induction, with nine offices across the nation, including the Bay Area, NTC is currently working with teachers and administrators in the following districts to design and implement sustainable, relevant, and highly effective coaching and professional learning opportunities for Early Learning educators: Alum Rock, Franklin-McKinley, Ravenswood, San Francisco, Fresno, and Oakland. We seek to partner with all districts in the Bay Area.

Need for Early Learning Support

To educate our youngest learners, early learning teachers need access to current content and research. Yet, in the early learning field, teachers do not have the same professional development opportunities and infrastructure as their K-12 peers. NTC provides outstanding professional development for our teachers and coaches.

Our Invitation to You

With the growing recognition that teacher professional growth is a crucial element to student success, NTC’s Early Learning Initiative has had an incredible first three years developing and testing our offerings. We are now poised and ready to grow our work significantly over the next few years, and are seeking additional funding support to:

1. Scale our efforts to support Early Learning Coaches in new districts or communities

Over the past three years, several potential partner districts and communities have approached NTC’s Early Learning team to enlist our services and receive coaching support. However, due to our team’s capacity, we have been unable to bring coaches to new partners. Support to expand our reach to additional districts and communities would help our team reach more students, teachers, and coaches, as well as collect additional data points so that our team is able to continue to refine our work to better meet the needs of coaches and teachers as we scale our work.

2. Develop and implement a Professional Learning Series for Early Learning Administrators

In January 2016, NTC’s Early Learning Initiative began a two-year project to develop and test a new Professional Learning Series for Early Learning Administrators. The effort will ensure an aligned system of support for high quality teaching in two districts where we support early learning teachers.

3. Organize an Early Learning Network

Members of our Early Learning team are often approached to partner with other organizations interested in exploring opportunities for learning from and with each other. To date, we have been unable to move on these requests due to a shortage in funding and staff capacity. Additional support would enable our team to more actively pursue partnerships with other organizations, perhaps through the creation of an Early Learning Network, to collectively grow our Early Learning expertise and knowledgebase.

4. Early Learning Infrastructure Support

Finally, NTC seeks general operating support for our Early Learning Initiative in order to continue to build internal infrastructure to support this work at NTC, to solidify the vision for our work, and to better enable our team to engage in partnership and learning opportunities to better scale and grow our work.

Thank you for supporting New Teacher Center’s Early Learning Initiative!
