NYSSRA Nordic is a New York State organization that helps increase participation in nordic skiing. We support clubs and groups across New York that host clinics, camps, races, lessons and activites for people of all ages, levels and abilities. NYSSRA-affiliated clubs teach young kids to ski and promote being active in the winter. Some NYSSRA clubs also work with disabled service women and men and athletes with special needs. Others work with athletes who want to compete in high level biathlon, ski-orienteering, and nordic ski races.
In 2013, NYSSRA Nordic would like to help support the growth of nordic ski infrastructure across New York. Our goal is to partner with three community parks associations to help improve and update their community trails systems and help them promote activities that will keep the community active and healthy.
To increase trail use in the winter months, NYSSRA in this fundraising effort will help purchase small snow-making operations that will extend the snow season. This will create opportunities for youth ski lessons, healthy family activities, and boost local interest in winter sports.
Additionally, we want to partner with advocacy groups like Protect Our Winters (POW) and 350.org that support local actions that can keep our winters white and families active and healthy year round. Winter enthusiasts in New York are all too familiar with the winter weather changes of the last few years: early December used to be reliably cold and white, March snow has become highly irregular, and recent winter seasons have seen snowfall far below average. These changes not only sadden ski enthusiasts but affect local businesses and economies. NYSSRA Nordic would like to join the fight to educate the public about the impact of human behavior and make small changes in communities for the better.
We currently have our first pilot project organized with the Friends of Cole's Woods and the City of Glens Falls. Our project proposal not only invigorates an already established local resource, but also makes ecologically friendly changes to the lighting system, expands winter usage of the park, and educates visitors about the natural treasures in their community. This project involves trail improvements, a 1.5K loop with snowmaking infrastucture, new lights and informational kiosks. The current fundraising goal for this project is $70,000. Please read more about our project and donate in any way you can!
