ATD Fourth World Movement is the US branch of the International Movement ATD Fourth World. Our projects focus on the sharing of knowledge among people of different backgrounds in an atmosphere of mutual respect and dignity. We then seek out and create forums where the voice and experience of those in poverty can influence public opinion and policy. ATD Fourth World holds consultative status with the United Nations.

Programs are based on three basic principles:

  • The inalienable dignity of each human being
  • The necessity to learn from families in poverty
  • The responsibility of all people to unite to overcome the injustices of poverty

The US branch has teams in Gallup (New Mexico), Appalachia (SW Virginia), Boston, New York , and New Orleans.

Our work - sample US initiatives

  • Artistic projects in Gallup, NM, New York City, and New Orleans allow youth to build their self-confidence, communicate with others, and learn new skills.
  • At the Gallup, NM Story Garden and New Orleans Street Libraries, we bring books, computers, and expressive art projects to children from under-resourced communities.
  • Public presentations, forums and events —such as panels, conferences, and commemorations of October 17, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty--in which those in poverty exchange with others their knowledge, experience, and efforts in struggling to overcome poverty.
