Imagine a world where ninety percent of children were never taught to read, where seventy percent of adults were unemployed, and where your children can be taken away with no warning. If you are blind in America today, that world is your reality. The National Federation of the Blind of Nebraska is changing what it means to be blind by fighting for childrens' rights to be literate and learn the only method of reading for the blind, Braille. We are fighting for jobs by educating employers that the blind are capable and hard-working employees. We are fighting to make sure that blind parents do not lose their children because a social services agency believes the many misconceptions about blind people's ability to raise their children safely.
As a state affiliate of the nation's oldest and largest consumer organization of the Blind, the NFB of Nebraska advocates for Nebraska's blind through its local chapters, including one in Lincoln. The NFBN is responsible for many activities throughout the state from advocating with local school districts to get blind children taught Braille, to meeting with legislators to promote changes in state laws to increase opportunities for blind Nebraskans, to conducting seminars and conferences to educate, inform, and empower blind adults, students, parents, and seniors.
This year, from June 13 to June 24, the National Federation of the blind of nebraska will do what too many schools are failing at; we will teach blind children to read and write. During the Braille Enrichment for Literacy Learning program, these students will be immersed in the only true method of literacy for the blind. They will spend time with competent, successful blind adults. They will learn to read through fun and challenging activities such as journal writing, scavenger hunts, and card games. Most importantly, they will come to realize that blindness doesn't stop them from living the life they want. Your donations during Give to Lincoln 2016 will help provide materials (including braille books and writing supplies), food, transportation, and other essentials for running this program.
We thank you for your donations in the past, and ask you to consider once again helping us change what it means to be blind.
