More About Us

Life today has become hectic and complicated, with increasingly demanding schedules and responsibilities. When management of our day-to-day living activities become strained, it is of little wonder that sometimes our pets suffer as a result. The #1 reason for animals surrendered to our shelter is "we are too busy ... lack of time ... they deserve better ...". Sometimes the good intention of caring for an animal turns into a burden and is perceived as undue stress in a hectic environment. Clearer thinking may reveal that our pets are therapeutic and that the true stress in our lives stem from elsewhere.

Nirvana Ridge Ferret Rescue has accepted and cared for well over 1,000 ferrets since inception. In , we have rescued 186 animals to include owner surrendered, abandoned, rescued from county animal shelters, and some rescued from hoarding situations.

All ferrets that come to the shelter, for whatever reason, are immediately provided a health evaluation, routine care and veterinary care, as required. Each animal that is admitted to the shelter is logged in a master registry with their name, description, color, age, sex, weight, and any distinguishing temperament or personality traits. Each is assigned a general health assessment. The routine care provided includes a flea shampoo bath, nail clipping, and ear cleaning with Ivermectin for the control of ear mites. Additional medical care may be provided, as needed.

NRFR actively networks with other ferret enthusiasts and organizations, local and nationally (and sometimes internationally), to join forces in the stand for the common cause to promote the domestic ferret. A recent example would be our efforts to encourage the legalization of pet ferret ownership in New York City and in California.

We work with community veterinarians, local pet stores, county animal shelters, other ferret groups/organizations and the general public to educate on the genuine endearing qualities and the total care of the ferret as a pet. We offer a variety of information packets and website references relating to all ferret topics concerning nutritional needs, care, health, and other related information.

Our shelter participates in adoption events with local humane societies, farm and pet stores for the purposes to locate loving permanent homes for our shelter ferrets. We set up adoption/information tables, bring our public relations ferrets out to meet the public for educational purposes. We screen all applicants for adoption for permanent placement to the best of our ability, which includes home visits prior to release, to ensure maximum assurance that the animal in placed with informed, caring and responsible owners.

NRFR engages in fund-raising activities to support the financial needs of the organization. We depend upon donations to support the continued care that we provide for our resident ferrets. None of the NRFR staff members are monetarily compensated. Conversely, we have all invested, and continue to invest, heavily in this labor of love to care for the sick, elderly, disabled, and often times, discarded ferrets.

Testimonials

We were looking for a companion for our single ferret, Koda. We met Karen at an adoption event and immediately could tell how much she cared for each and every one of her fur babies!
We went to visit some of the ferrets a couple of months later to look for a friend for Koda. Karen brought out several ferrets and allowed us to spend time with several singles to see which one(s) Koda would get along with. Koda found her friend pretty quickly, Shelly. They all played for about an hour while we let Koda pick out her new friend.
We are so happy to have Shelly as part of the business and look forward to spoiling her for years to come.

Karen is great and the work she puts into caring for these little guys is beyond words! It is simply amazing.
Thank you so very much for all you do, Karen! We promise Shelly will be happy in her new home!

My son and I had a wonderful experience at Nirvana Ridge. It was evident from the time we walked through the door that these animals were loved and well cared for. Karen knew them all and was able to help us find the right furbaby (s) match for us. We are so in love with lucy and louis....thank you Nirvana Ridge!

As a long-time ferret owner, I truly appreciate the work Karen does at Nirvana Ridge Ferret Rescue. Too often, people make the decision to acquire a ferret, not knowing the reality of the commitment. There are so many homeless ferrets it is heartbreaking. Those that make their way to Karen are treated incredibly well, receiving love, plenty of enrichment, excellent veterinary care and the best in diet. The support and education adopters receive from the rescue makes a very positive impact! Her efforts to better educate the general public about ferrets are also commendable. If I were a lost and wandering ferret, Nirvana Ridge is where I would want to end up!

I had a great experience adopting our newest ferret from Nirvana Ridge. My older ferret had a great time playing with the other ferrets when we came by. He got along perfectly with the little one we adopted. :) Karen was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and recommend some nutritious food that helped my ferrets fill out and grow a shiny coat! If ever the time comes for another rascal, we will definitely return to Nirvana Ridge.

Before you go to a local pet store to buy a ferret, please contact Nirvana Ridge Rescue. They have beautiful ferrets of all ages needing a forever home. The process is very quick and easy, the rescue knows all about each ferrets personality and energy level and can match you up with the perfect addition to your family. Nirvana responds to any questions or concerns quickly (I had responses within a few hours), provided me with enough essential food until I could purchase the perfect blend for my new babies, and is even available after the adoption if something comes up.

We adopted 2 ferrets from Nirvana Ridge Rescue. Karen was wonderful to work with. She showed us ferrets that would work with the 3 we already had. She was very patient and kind with our children. I highly recommend adopting from this rescue and would do so again.
