“This after all is what the whole struggle is about, to establish a reign of justice and a rule of love…in every community.” - Dr. King, March 28, 1965, Grace Cathedral, San Francisco
We continue to be confronted in our daily, national and global life with the tragic necessity to state that black lives matter, that Dreamers, too, can dream, and that all people deserve to live with dignity. Our core commitment to beloved community is what drives our mission, and transformation of hearts and minds within every segment of society is the hallmark of NorcalMLK’s programming. The NorcalMLK Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to extending Dr. King’s vision of just and beloved communities through ongoing, targeted health, learning and celebration initiatives throughout the San Francisco bay area and the northern California region.
Healthy Communities
"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane."
Our Healthy Communities initiative promotes health, wellness, sustainability and preparedness in and among underserved communities through festivals and other direct community programs designed to bring greater access to the doorstep of those in need. Our farmers market program and annual MLK Health and Wellness Festival, in partnership with the San Francisco Department of the Environment, the San Francisco Aids Foundation and San Francisco Chapter of the Links, Inc. and health providers, help to propel us toward a healthy future.
Learning Communities
"Intelligence plus character -- that is the goal of true education."
The Learning Communities initiative envisions an environment where all can learn and deserve an opportunity to succeed. Through the literary, visual and media arts, we help to increase the joy of learning and the vital requirement of literacy in the functioning of daily life. Our Project Pull Plus! summer internships bring paid STEM opportunities at leading private companies and civic leadership training together to build high impact leaders. Our annual Black Comix Arts Festival is one of the nation's largest creative engagements for African American and artists of color in popular culture. And, our annual King and Faith Lectures brings renown scholars in communication with the community on the vision of Dr. King.
Celebrating Communities
"Free at last...Free at last...Thank God almighty; I'm free at last."
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday celebrations in San Francisco bring thousands of celebrants together annually to honor the legacy of Dr. King every third Monday in January at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Gardens. Each year over 12,000 celebrants are provided free, round-trip, transportation from throughout the region through our transportation partners, BART, Caltrain, SFMTA, and Golden Gate Transit and Ferry.
NorcalMLK is fostering a new paradigm that unlocks the dignity, value and promise in every person, and we are seeking partners at all levels with a deep hunger for realizing a beloved and just community, nation and world.
