North East Medical Services (NEMS) is one of the largest community health centers in the United States targeting the medically underserved Asian population. Our mission is to provide affordable, comprehensive, compassionate, and quality health care services in a linguistically competent and culturally sensitive manner to improve the health and well-being of the community. NEMS was founded in 1968 and began serving patients in 1971, and we’re excited to celebrate our 50th anniversary with you all!
Over the last 50 years, we have grown from a small primary care clinic in Chinatown to a large organization of twelve clinics, three enrollment centers, and a new Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) Center that supports the health care needs of over 70,000 patients each year. Please join us as we take on our next challenge, the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic!
Your support will ensure that NEMS continues to provide accessible and vital health care services, including COVID-19 response, to underserved and vulnerable Asians across the Bay Area!
Serving Our Patients
In 2020, NEMS served over 65,000 patients, a majority of whom report being better served in a language other than English (81%). (Prior to COVID-19, we reached an all-time high of serving 70,000+ patients!)
Nearly 90% of patients are Asian or Asian American.
Because of this, most of our staff can speak at least one Asian language. By providing care in the patients’ primary language, staff can better care for and communicate with patients and in turn, patients can obtain a deeper understanding of their health status.
As soon as COVID-19 vaccines became available, NEMS has been working diligently to get access to vaccines and to get them into the arms of our patients. We currently provide COVID-19 vaccination at ten clinics, vaccinating upwards of 1,000 people a day.
Serving Our Community
Through generous support from the American Heart Association, NEMS received a grant to support the NEMS COVID-19 Mobile Testing Program, which aims to provide San Francisco’s immigrant Asian population with convenient, accessible COVID-19 testing by deploying our mobile testing unit to offsite and remote locations, targeting COVID-19 prevalent areas and underserved populations. The program has already impacted approximately 2,000 individuals in the community.
As the focus shifts from COVID-19 testing to vaccinations for all adults, we are looking into opportunities to use our mobile testing program (aka community response units) for community vaccination events.
We are also making plans to expand access of the COVID-19 vaccine to vulnerable populations.
Supporting Our Healthcare Heroes
Our staff have been working tirelessly on the frontlines since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic; from delivering medications to elderly patients to hosting COVID-19 testing events throughout underserved communities – they are truly healthcare heroes!
We work with local businesses and generous donors to secure much-needed PPE to keep staff safe, and we show our appreciation to staff with staff appreciation lunches throughout the year.
As a thank you for your generous donation, each donor will receive recognition and/or a small token of our appreciation.
