Every week a new person enters our building searching for an ancestor. Whether they just want to find information about a single ancestor or line or seek to really delve into genealogy, the NEAGS volunteers (there are no paid positions) strive to assist the person. We do not "do their genealogy" for them but to teach them how to research their line(s) & document their findings.
Two sisters came to the Nichols Memorial Library (home of NEAGS) searching for the name of their great-grandfather. That was their main goal as no one in the family knew. Before the day was over, they not only knew his name but found that there was a Revolutionary War soldier in their line.
Other people have literally found "cousins" in the library while researching.
While we focus on the counties below, we have family name books, surname files, many books on various Alabama counties, books about many of the states, and reference information.
