Northeast Family Resource Center

Founded in 1990, the Northeast Family Center has served many of Lincoln’s most diverse and low-income neighborhoods. Our hard working parents do not have discretionary income for educational and enrichment activities for themselves or their children. Whether it be through our Community Learning Centers at Brownell and Norwood Park or our Early Childhood Education, Parents as Partners program, our goal is to provide quality programming for all residents of our neighborhood, regardless of income.

 Offering support to the entire family is very important because there might be barriers that the family is experiencing. Whether that be divorce, unemployment or mental illness all of these can impact a child's quality of family life and learning. 

The Johnson Family joined our center 1 year ago. When they enrolled their children they were very upfront about their situation. They were living in an apartment that was not big enough for their family of 6, they were in need of clothing for their children, diapers and guidance for their child that was acting out physically towards others. We were able to provide clothing through donations from our families that we serve and diapers through the Helping Hands Grant we receive from United Way Women in Philanthropy. After doing observations of the child in the classroom the staff were able to create a timeline that showed the times of the days that caused the child to become physical with others. It was during transition times because the child was so engaged with the activity he was doing that he didn't want to stop. Working together with the family we were able to develop a plan that would support the child and show emotions of anger in a non-physical way. We are proud that they are a part of our NFC Family!
