NAICL is a coalition of congregations and organizations in Flagstaff, Sedona, and Prescott, with three basic goals:
- To build relationships across our community based on trust and a willingness to listen to each other.
- To equip our members and leadership with skills and practices to get results.
- To achieve change on concrete issues, as part of our common call to justice.
And NAICL is getting results! In 2012, our leaders
- Organized the 2012 Northern Arizona Education Summit, bringing together over 100 community members to share critical information and form action teams to address education issues in the November elections and beyond.
- Launched the West Sedona School Family Center, offering weekly English classes for parents, a homework club for kids and a center for immigrant community-building.
- Hosted a public meeting with Flagstaff Police Chief Kevin Treadway, in which over 100 people participated, to understand Flagstaff’s implementation of SB1070 and initiate further collaboration.
- Supported parent/teacher organizing teams at Kinsey and Killip Elementary Schools, which secured a new bus route at Kinsey, schoolwide anti-bullying programs at Killip, and district funding for teacher training to incorporate citizenship education into classrooms at both schools.
- Organized house meetings with employees and patients of North Country HealthCare to address concerns about translation and interpretation services, leading to the hiring of an additional, full-time, Spanish interpreter and the creation of a cultural competence committee to implement further service improvements.
- Organized for the passage of the 2012 Flagstaff Unified School District bond and hosted an online forum for the FUSD governing board election in which all candidates participated.
- Provided training and support for Public Achievement at Killip and Kinsey Schools, in which 200 students participated, securing a new playground at Kinsey and anti-graffiti and bullying efforts at Killip.
