Northern Nevada Chapter of the Nfb of Nevada

The national Federation of the blind is the largest organized movement of blind people in the US.  We provide orientation and obility and independent living skills training for the blind by the blind.  We endorse legislation to improve the quality of life of persons who are blind.  We organize interests and services for the blind such as sports and recreation, parenting, technology, and resources for sighted parents of blind Children.
There are approximately 59,000 persons who are blind in the state of Nevada.  Nevada is also sited as wone of the five least accessible places to live for persons with disabilities in the United States. The national Federation of the Blind of Northern Nevada is working to change this, and we hope that many of the improvements we are advocating for will make life better for all Nevadans, not only the blind.
This year, we are working to improve access to public transit in Reno.  There will be an 8 week independent living skills training class held in the summer at the Northern Nevada Centre for Independent living.  We will be working to raise disability issues on campus to help post-secondary students receive the accomodations they need to succeed in the classroom.  We have numerous fundraising and outreach events planned to raise awareness and interest in the NFB.  Most importantly, we are hoping to send a full contingent to the National NFB convention in Florida this year.  National Convention will give us better ideas on how to organize and  how to forward our adjenda.  It's a very important networking opportunity for many of us who have never met other blind people.
We have begun forming community partnerships with organizations such as the nevada Centre for Independent living, and the nevada association of the deaf, and we are hoping to become a vibrant and active member of the community.
The NFB of Northern Nevada has more ideas than we can possibly use this year, even if we had the money to do everything we want.  Of course, no one ever has enough money to do everything they want, but we can do a lot with a little, and we appreciate your support.
