NWCD works to protect the soil and water natural resources in the northwest corner of Connecticut through conservation, technical assistance, and education. We leverage the opportunities provided via grants, and our network of conservation partners to expand our work. In 2025 alone, NWCD:

  • Awarded $27,500 in scholarships to local high school graduates, in honor of Dick Leavenworth, Jacolyn “Jackie” Mott, and Rev. Ledlie Laughlin Jr.

  • Held over 55+ Educational events on topics related to conservation such as soil health, water quality, native plants, etc. Many of these events provided hands-on environmental learning opportunities for children.

  • Brought 3,500+ Native and Beneficial Plants into the region and distributed during our Earth Day Plant Sale, increasing habitat for native wildlife and pollinators.

  • Finished constructing a 1.3 Million gallon Manure Storage facility at Freund’s Farm with funding secured by NWCD from NFWF Long Island Sound Futures Fund.

  • Spent 225+ Solar Inspection Hours monitoring stormwater and sediment controls at large-scale solar development sites in partnership with CT DEEP.

  • Supported CT Envirothon, a state-wide high school environmental competition focusing on aquatics, soils, forestry and wildlife that aims to educate and inspire the next generation of environmental professionals. NWCD staff helps run in-person workshops, create online resources and videos, and run the state-wide yearly competition.

  • And much more!
