Oak Hill School

Oak Hill School, located in Scotia, New York, is a private day school which serves 18 districts and 9 counties in New York State that educates and helps students with significant emotional and behavioral disorders.  Our mission is to provide a quality individualized education for students with emotional challenges by providing a safe and stimulating learning environment, while focusing on their positive well-being.  

New York State Department of Education has recently granted us approval to increase enrollment by 50%, due to the overwhelming number of students on waiting lists.  The cost of this expansion is approximately $500,000.  Due to the unique type of school at Oak School, funding is based upon resources from the school districts to support the cost of staff and educational materials for the students; however, costs to support the building and structure are not covered and that is why we need your help.  

 

Our Story….

Since 1970, Oak Hill School has been providing a fresh start for children whose emotional/behavioral challenges keep them from being successful in a traditional school setting.  Ruth Crandall, an educator left the normal school district to educate students in her home that had emotional or behavioral problems.  Ruth felt that by giving the students a safe environment coupled with a non-traditional approach they would have a much higher success rate.   Oak Hill School continues that tradition by providing our students with a program that utilizes a variety of resources including, but not limited to: nature and the outdoors, hiking, cooking, gardening, physical education activities and the arts to build self-esteem and learning in the core curriculum areas.

The school has been adapted since the early 1970’s to accommodate more students, and as the need increased in the past few years, which is validated by the over 40 students on a waiting list, we are now required to build an addition once again.
