Welcome to the Okionu Birth Foundation! We are a nonprofit based in the Denver Metro area that provides 6 weeks of meal and group mental health support to low-income BIPOC postpartum families.
Studies have shown that food insecurity and postpartum depression disproportionately affect low-income communities of color. We directly address these inequities in low income postpartum families of color.
Mission
STRENGTHEN LIVES, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES
Okionu Birth Foundation is built on a passion for improving the lives of individuals and families. We connect the entire family to the help and services they need, right when they need it. We provide so much more than just food and group support. In partnership with you, we are building strong people, communities, and families.
What we do
Our programs are intended to improve maternal/paternal/child health, reduce infant mortality and extend preventative services to families with a significant risk factor but without a diagnosed problem. We do this by providing 6 weeks of nutritious meals and group mental health support for new parents. It's an innovative way of providing support that addresses the needs of low-income BIPOC postpartum families.
When we started
Okionu Birth foundation was founded in March 2021 by Jacquelyn Clemmons, a Traditional Birth and Postpartum doula with over a decade of experience as a postpartum doula. Her existing passion to provide nurturing care to pregnant and postpartum families drove her to create a solution that impacted the overall wellness of postpartum families on a larger scale.
Programs
Through our partnership with Therapist of Color Collaborative, we provide wrap around, culturally sensitive, relevant mental health support. Each family receives 6 weeks of curated group therapy support and education to empower them on their parenting journey. Our groups are broken down to address the individual needs of mothers/birthing people and fathers/partners so that both parents can feel supported and thrive moving forward.
Local chefs prepare nourishing meals that are delivered weekly to each home. We provide 10 meals to each family so that they can spend time healing and bonding with their new baby. Each meal provided is prepared with postpartum nourishment in mind. Our chefs fully support the mission.
Testimonial
Here is a testimonial of a new postpartum mother sharing the impact of having meal support for her family during her first six weeks home.
Thank you for supporting Okionu Birth Foundation. With every gift you provide to Okionu Birth Foundation, we are able to provide 10 healthy meals per week and group therapy support to a low-income family with a new baby where the need is great and help is scarce.
In Gratitude,
Jacquelyn
