One Hope Village (OHV) began as a gently whispered thought that has grown into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The founder of OHV spent many years in the community serving in different capacities including working as a public-school teacher, a CASA Supervisor, and a parent engagement liaison in the Trauma Informed Court of the Eighth Region North - Child Protective Court. Over the years, a continual gap in services was noticed. While there were supports and programs for children going through the foster care and court system, the support for parents was almost non-existent. Thus, OHV was born to come alongside parents going through the hardest time of their lives. OHV helps stabilize, heal, and redirect individuals for the betterment of their families and to disrupt negative generational trajectories.

One of our specific programs is the Parent Mentorship Program. become a part of the Parent Mentorship Program, individuals are nominated through referrals from their attorney and/or a caseworker. Upon interview and acceptance, the program pairs a Mentor, who has successfully been through the court system, with a Parent, who is currently in the court system.

Mentors serve as an individual with firsthand knowledge and experience to assist a Parent who is going through the reunification process. As someone who has walked through similar experiences, our Mentors are able to challenge, encourage, and equip Parents in ways no one else can. They have committed to show the Parents that they serve how to do the hard work to recover, heal, and forgive as they overcome negative generational trajectories to create a restored family unit. They help in many capacities including, but not limited to, building healthy relationships, finding resources for the parent, providing tools to cope with triggers, encouraging communication with all parties, and most of all bringing hope of restoration. The Mentor meets with the Parent twice a month. A specific plan tailored to the needs of the Parent is created, and the Mentor and Parent work through this plan. Upon reunification and the closure of the Parent’s case the Parent has the opportunity to enter into the program as a Mentor thus creating cyclical growth.

One of the ways OHV is building community is through a once a month “Family Dinner.” The Family Dinner is a gathering time to bring together all leaders, mentors, parents, children, and volunteers. OHV has seen the benefit that sitting around a table and sharing a meal together can create. We offer a safe and trusting environment for parents to commune together while strengthening bonds of trust and deepening relationships. During Family Dinners, leaders, mentors, and parents participate in a workshop that helps to build skills for daily living, parenting, and trauma healing. The workshops are taught by Wise County community members who are experts in their field and have volunteered their time. The goal of these gatherings is to add to the parent’s tool belts, ensuring needed skills to be stable and thrive. To date, our workshops have included a budgeting series, mentor development, believing in yourself, building your identity, and developing healthy relationships.

While the adult group is hard at work learning life skills, our childcare team is serving 14 children under the age of 8. Our children (who belong to mentors and parents) complete a TBRI© lesson and story book from the Purvis Institute every month. OHV’s goal is to not only give parents resources, but to also give the children in our program tools to disrupt negative trauma responses.

The goal of the Parent Mentorship Program is to give parents tools, support, and resources to strengthen, stabilize, and disrupt negative generational trajectories. Paring a Parent with a Mentor who has similar lived experiences is of incalculable worth. Parents have someone who has been on the same road and who has overcome intense hardships. Parents learn that hope, redemption, and restoration of their family is possible.

Since the launch of the Parent Mentorship Program in October 2023 OHV has seen community built, parents supported, and most of all deep healing occur.  OHV is changing life trajectories for the better through our Parent Mentorship Program – one parent at a time. With your support, OHV will be able to further educate Mentors, support Parents, and continue to change the trajectory of lives for years to come.
