The Open Cupboard

The Open Cupboard is an all volunteer food shelf supported largely by community donations.  It was established in February, 1993 by a local community member.  It started out in a 3 room office and is now housed in a new 3000 sq foot building because of great community support.  In 2020, the food shelf served 644 families, 1,325 people from newborn to senior citizen age.  We distributed over 93,000 lbs of food.  These numbers do not include the many people that come to the food shelf each week for bread , bakery, vegetables, clothing and other needs. 

Throughout 2020 and 2021 due to Covid restriction we had limited and restricted services.  The Open Cupboard was one of the very few food shelf's in the state of WI, allowing up to 3 people in at a time to pick up food.  The all volunteer staff prepacked the clients' choice food, while the client stayed in front of a plexiglass.   Now in 2022, are doors are fully open and we welcome all to come in and get weekly produce, bread and bakery items as well as their monthly food allocation.  

In addition we have a Back Pack program for children on free and reduced lunch.  Each week a backpack goes home with 7 items of food. Once a month each family receives a veggie coupon for $10 worth of fresh or frozen vegetables, a coupon for 1lb. of ground meat and a coupon for 1 gallon of milk.  This program runs from October-May and we average about 38 backpacks a week.

In 2021, we helped 22 children with school supplies providing everything on their school list including a graphing calculator.  Though they could not enter the food shelf to choose the color of their supplies, they were able to choose their backpack color.

The Open Cupboard also offers free clothing and household items.  This area had been closed throughout 2020 and 2021 but is now open for all.  We are accepting clothing or household items at this time but no furniture or toys as of right now.  

The Open Cupboard is open Monday and Wednesday from 9-12 and Thursday 11-4.  We encourage anyone who would like to see our facility to stop in during open hours and we will be happy to give you an overview of our programs.
