Open Door Bird Sanctuary’s mission is to raise avian awareness while inspiring people to co-exist with the natural world that surrounds them. The Sanctuary is the only facility of its kind in the area. Open Door offers a unique combination of environmental and wildlife education as well as being a destination for both Door County residents and tourists. Highlights of what we offer that are unique to our organization are:

  • Feature live native and non-native raptors for educational observation
  • Offer engaging environmental education through interactive, live behavioral demonstrations
  • Incorporate nature education along with raptor education to offer diverse program topics that highlight the property’s ecosystems and that of Door County in general including self-guided hiking trails
  • Deliver outreach educational bird programs to schools, nursing homes, club meetings, festivals, etc.
  • Offer a home to injured raptors (birds of prey)

We are open to the public seasonally and equally as important, we can bring our programming to off site venues. In today’s world, we would be short changing our mission though, if our interest and focus was exclusive to those areas.  Just as there is now global economy, communication, and travel, it is a global environment as well.  Whether directly impacted by environmental issues, concerns, and occurrences from other parts of the world, or learning through the experiences of others, it is our duty to view the environment from a global perspective. Our native and non-native birds help us to educate in that regard. In addition, Door County is a migratory fly-way and by preserving land here we continue to provide not only a safe haven for the migratory population sustained in Door County, but also a bountiful number of species that call Door County home. This is largely due to the many tracts of land that have been preserved by various organizations like the Land Trust and now Open Door Bird Sanctuary.

Our land is a treasure of pristine mini ecologies with abundant and uncommon plantlife. We not only serve our communities but offer a wonderful experience to Door County’s many tourists. Having had expert evaluation, we do believe that there are good reasons to support conservation of this land along with our avian residents.

We now have a solid foundation to grow from, taking ownership of our property in 2020 and debt free! Looking to the future of the sanctuary, we are prioritizing the goal of firmly establishing ODBS to be in place for generations to come. With 19 birds of prey, including a Bald Eagle, we continue to expand our programming on site and throughout the county.
