Lekòl Dete 2016

 

Opportunities for Communities, Inc. (OfC) initiated a summer education program in Haiti in 2011. Lekòl Dete is an innovative program that shatters social and cultural barriers between the “Restavek” (indentured servant or “slave”) and “free” children of Haiti.

 

Lekòl Dete 2016 has grown and will serve 200 plus children in 2016 and employ a staff of local teachers, administrators, and kitchen staff.

 

OfC is working to raise funds for the costs of Lekòl Dete (and other programs) to ensure that Haitian teachers and staff are compensated and that, working together, we provide a safe, healthy, educational, and fun activity for children. OfC promotes the health of the children at Lekòl Dete providing one meal each day consisting of rice, beans, meat, or vegetables. We serve over 4,000 meals during the 4 weeks of Lekòl Dete – often the only meal that a child will receive that day.

 

Lekòl Dete uses innovative approaches to practical skills learning; critical, analytical, and strategic thinking; and fine motor skills, complement the more traditional approaches of memorization and recitation in Haitian schools. Collaborative learning is encouraged as children enjoy working and learning together during the educational activities that foster mutual understanding and respect while enhancing learning skills.
