Organizations In Training (OIT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides a variety of personal development services to non-profit organizations and schools, and to the youth, parents, students and families they serve. Current OIT partner organizations include the Monarch School and Toussaint Academy San Diego.

The children and families that we provide services to are often in a viscous cycle of dependency on a variety of sources – some beneficial but many are not. Unfortunately, they are excessively reliant upon these services and the negative affects trickle down to all members of the community.  Our system works to train each individual to develop and maintain an internal support system and structure that allows them to rely more on themselves and less on others, drugs, medications, etc.

OIT is comprised of a team of well trained, motivated, resilient, and resourceful coaches and mentors with the willingness and capability to teach and train through a customized system of learning the 5 skills necessary to function more independently and successfully as individuals and within relationships. The 5 key skills in our program include self-understanding, understanding of others, relational skills, goal accomplishment and self-management.

The overall goal of all training through OIT services is to help the recipient to consistently think, feel and act in a calm-assertive manner regardless of the barriers that typically prompt aggressive, passive, or passive-aggressive behavior. OIT training will explore and educate on the concepts of belief, fear, need, desire, unproductive reactions, emotions, the aggressions, and how they all coordinate to form behavior.

The Problem… Thousands of youth throughout San Diego County are challenged by severe adversity. Their daily experiences often include inconsistent and inadequate residency, chaotic family configurations, dangerous encounters, temptations and a lack of available resources. They are often lacking the minimum amounts of safety, security, stability, structure and support necessary to survive, progress or prosper.

From a young age, these youth learn the harsh realities of the world we live in. They are often confused by how they feel, what they think and why they act the way that they do. Their role models and upbringing often lead them to learn to automatically default to aggressive, passive or passive-aggressive reactions. These youth have accumulated a tremendous amount of guilt, fear, anger, grief and stress at a young age. Many feel oppressed, dictated to and overly dependent on others just to stay afloat. Many lack the vision of what life could be or even the hope that things can change.

The schools and related organizations that support these youth try their best to help them learn the skills necessary to function in school. Unfortunately, due to lack of time, skill, willingness, or the sheer number and depth of the challenges presented, they are unable to provide the necessary leadership to many of these kids. The organizations are struggling through their own adversities or lack the training or experience to guide these youth to learn how to better understand themselves and others, to relate more effectively, to manage their own thoughts, emotions and behaviors.

The Solution… Many, if not all youth challenged with adversity need to learn these valuable skills. They need role models, often times male role models, with the skills to coach and train with a calm-assertive approach. They need mentors, with the strength, resourcefulness and resilience to consistently receive the youth’s messages of discomfort and aggression. They need people in their lives who will not only absorb these messages but also send well-designed, beneficial responses with the intention of teaching the youth to learn to think critically, problem solve and make beneficial choices for themselves and others.

Our team of mentors is willing and able to role model, teach, coach and lead in a fun, kid friendly manner. We use a simple, easy to learn yet comprehensive plan to guide youth to learn skills and to become more confident in their capability to manage their own thoughts, feelings and actions. These youth all deserve a chance - a chance to contrast their daily experiences with how it could be and how it should be. We have developed a team of highly trained mentors with experience in our system for mentoring youth and the professionals working within these very difficult situations.
