OurSpace World Inc

Founded in 2011 as a community healing space,  OurSpace World supports groups of folks who believe cooperation is essential to liberation. Since 2018, OSW and its current 27members have helped almost 30 Black farmers in 5 states and contributed to the stewardship of almost 40 land bases in their community food sovereignty efforts. To ensure this work continues for generations, OSW creates educational opportunities for Black youth, families, and young adults.

Our Work 

The Ujima Initiative cultivates collaboration to strengthen our local Black healthy food ecosystem and this year saw new farmers train at 12 locations where over 750 hours of farming knowledge was passed on to another generation. Calabash supports and funnels resources to groups working toward sustainable food sovereignty and strengthens our local Black growers with over 10,000 hours annually of technical assistance and support, including construction of 3 storage sheds and a hoop house thus far. Project Teach 22 uses outdoor education to prepare youth to become 22nd-century-ready land stewards and this year our students visited 12 Black land and farming initiatives to engage in hands-on, outdoor education. Finally, the Black Food, Black Futures Festival led by 10 high school and college interns, saw hundreds of residents come out to donate over 750 pounds of food to hungry folks in Prince George's County, MD, last October, while celebrating the resilience of Black food culture with 40+ Black chefs, farmers, and food activists.

Our impact includes:

• over 20,000 pounds of produce grown and distributed in Prince George's County, MD
• over $1.1 million dollars funneled to food sovereignty work across the country
• over 150 youth reached through field days / field trips, summer camps, internships, and more
