ABOUT US

Founded 21 years ago as a LGBTQ+ film screening series, OUT at the Movies has grown to be the leading LGBTQ+ arts organization in Western North Carolina and a leading film festival in the Southeast. Our mission is to strengthen our community by showcasing cinema that reflects LGBTQ+ life, and empower emerging artists who are embarking on their storytelling journey.

OUR WORK

The core of our organization revolves around our annual international film festival (running this year from October 3rd to October 6th). Since our festival began 10 years ago, we've brought over 300 filmmakers from around the world to Winston-Salem to showcase their newest works. In addition to this core programming, we have a keen focus on supporting emerging artists and student-filmmakers in the form of our Emerging Artist Film Grant, which has awarded more than $12,000 over the past two years. Our latest initiative, the Queer History Project (watch one of our pieces from last year, below) is a collaboration with student filmmakers in the WFU Documentary Film Program, and produces original documentary films that archive and celebrate LGBTQ+ culture in the Winston-Salem/Triad area.
