Out in the Bay is the San Francisco Bay Area's radio show and global podcast about queer life and issues. We blend journalism and oral history to bring you news and provocative conversation from and about LGBTQIA+ people and their allies in California and beyond. Our mission is to advance civil rights by sharing LGBTQIA+ stories with the world, opening hearts and minds and replacing ignorance with knowledge.

Since 2004, we've served a growing audience that wants to be entertained and informed about our issues, people, history, and culture. Out in the Bay is also a vital community service that publicizes the critical work of other non-profits, artists, writers, and activists.

Recent episodes have featured queer California Supreme Court Justices Kelli Evans and Martin Jenkins; transgender activist, educator and musician Nick Lawrence; writers and performers such as drag queen Rock M. Sakura, "bounce" music artist Big Freedia, and authors Robert Jones, Jr. and Lauren Hough -- creators whose work entertains while adressing tough subjects. We've hosted discussions about COVID's effect on our community; mental health; parenting and mentoring queer kids; immigration; discrimination of all types; homelessness; gun violence -- to name just a few -- with experts and everyday people who share their LGBTQIA+ perspectives.

Our show touches people in California and across the world, changing perspectives and lives.

When we interviewed the founder of an organization that helps queer people flee countries in which they’re persecuted, one of our listeners was so moved that he and his partner sponsored two gay refugees from Iran and Kazakhstan.

He wrote to us: “We were thrilled that the young Iranian was finally resettled in Australia. ... We’ve been able to talk with and see him, via Skype, which is pretty cool. He seems like a nice guy. I thought you might like to know what’s resulted from your interview.”

Other listeners have said:

“What you and your team are doing is so very important. So far, I have liked (and found interesting) every show I've heard.”

“This particular podcast gave me, as a disabled (blind) and chronically ill person (HIV) so much to think about.  So thanks for that and I wish you best of luck with future broadcasts.”

“Thank you SO much for alerting me to this amazing book ["The Prophet" by Robert Jones Jr]! Your interview with him is great, focusing more on the LBGTQ+ aspect than other interviews.”

Your donation will help us cover stipends for our producers and audio editors and on-going basic expenses, like web hosting fees, recording studio and office costs -- all the things that enable us to produce our features and distribute them to podcast platforms here and abroad and to radio stations around the USA.

Listen: Out in the Bay is available whenever and wherever you are. Hear recent episodes on your favorite podcast platforms and at www.OutintheBay.org, where you can also find past favorites, archives and more. Our features have also been distributed nationwide via PRX (the Public Radio Exchange) to radio stations across the USA.
