Pamoza means "together". Our motto, based on an African proverb, captures the essence of our approach to sustainable community development. "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go pamoza."
Working together is a powerful approach. Pamoza's programs help to transform the lives of children and families in rural Malawi by bringing together privileged and under-privileged communities to share the Gospel and meet the physical needs of vulnerable families. Pamoza was founded by Dr. Mike Mtika, a sociology professor at Eastern University and a Delco resident for more than 20 years. During one of his sociology courses, Dr. Mtika took some of his students from Eastern University to his home village in Malawi, one of the 10 poorest countries in the world. The students were so impacted by the conditions they saw that three of them decided to move to Malawi after graduation and helped to start Pamoza's initial programs in the villages where we work.
Pamoza's C.H.I.E.F. approach addresses five key areas of transformation:
Pamoza engages communities in the U.S. to learn more about the needs in Malawi and to get involved in service-learning projects that improve lives for very vulnerable families. One of our approaches is to engage students in Delco and Greater Philadelphia to become global citizens by understanding how people in Malawi live and how to help them thrive, not just survive. We have taken students to Malawi, facilitated culture days at schools, supported student-led ideas, hosted assemblies, collected school supplies, and so much more. Our goal - bring people pamoza to affect change for the families we serve in rural Malawi.
