A 14-year-old stands centerstage, Lemmond Theater at Misericordia University, bathed in a pale blue light. The curtain closes, the crowd applauds. Over the last three weeks, this performer and their friends brought to life an all-original musical. The only actors to have ever played these characters, sang these songs, performed this show. PATAsphere, a nonprofit performing arts training academy, is a trailblazer in performing arts education. Proudly celebrating over a decade of their transformative three-week Summer PATA Camp in Dallas, PA, this vibrant program invites children and teens to immerse themselves in a world of artistic creation and self-expression. They dive into an exhilarating summer experience—constructing sets, mastering choreography, fashioning costumes, fostering friendships, and crafting lasting memories. It's more than just a camp; it's where summer buzzes with creativity and camaraderie.
At Summer PATA, participants undergo comprehensive training that harmoniously blends the artistic and scientific dimensions of performance. PATAsphere’s training is rooted in cutting-edge theories encompassing motor learning, neuroscience, and education, creating a unique model that enhances the retention and application of novel motor skills. Addressing a critical gap in traditional performing arts training, PATAsphere places a strong emphasis on vocal health, a concern often overshadowed in the industry. Their approach, backed by research, actively works to prevent vocal injuries reported by a large portion of professional community. Performers also develop essential life skills, including critical thinking, problem- solving, and leadership, setting them on a path to communicate with kindness, empathy, intelligence, and respect. These skills have garnered increasing attention for their capacity to improve academic performance, foster positive social behavior, reduce emotional distress, and mitigate conduct problems in schools. Additionally, these skills are correlated with increased high school and college graduation rates and positively influence earning potential.
At the heart of PATAsphere is a commitment to inclusivity and neurodiversity, celebrating each individual’s unique contribution to the arts. The staff is trained to deliver a learning experience that respects and embraces the diverse learning styles and needs of all participants, including individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community, fostering an environment where every young artist can thrive.
