We are focusing on our Veteran Critical Home Repair Program

Patuxent Habitat for Humanity has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Patuxent Habitat for Humanity has joined #GIVINGTUESDAY to raise funds for our Veterans’ Critical Home Repair Program. We have two ongoing projects we would like to complete before the end of 2016.
The first is to replace a critically needed well pump and structural repairs on a veteran’s home in Chaptico where the home was damaged by a fallen tree. The second project is to find funding for a veteran and his family which needed a roof replacement, insulation, and a vapor barrier to protect against mold and keep the house warm through the winter.  We have many requests for Veterans’ Critical Home Repairs and we would like to help each person that applies but because of budget restraints we are unable to do so at this time.

How does homeownership program work?

Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Patuxent Habitat for Humanity builds houses with the homeowners.  Houses are sold at no profit to selected families with no interest loans issued over a fixed period.  Costs of these houses differ relative to location, labor, land, and building materials. A Patuxent Habitat for Humanity house in the area averages approximately $110,000.  Affordable monthly mortgage payments are repaid from 20 to 30 years and are used to support the construction of more houses.

How does the partnership with the selected homeowner work?
Patuxent Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program, but is a joint venture in which those who benefit from the housing ministry are involved in the work at various levels.  Each selected partner-family is required to invest “sweat equity” hours into the construction of their house. This produces a feeling of homeownership among family members, and fosters the development of positive relationships within the community.
