Paws, Awes & Claws is a 501c3 nonprofit animal rescue. As such, we operate 100% on donations! This means that we have to do lots of fundraising in order to cover the costs for animal care, supplies, housing etc and that we receive NO government or other funding. We rescue dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and even bunnies! Our goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, fully vet, and find FUREVER homes for animals in need in the metro Detroit area and surrounding areas!  In the last year, we have also expanded to helping rescue some animals from Texas as well due to their extreme dog overpopulation problem - we pull groups of dogs from the kill lists there every so often to help them avoid euthanasia and find homes here in Michigan where we have more adopters. This also helps families here in Michigan that are interested in adopting a specific breed find a dog or puppy that they can rescue who is a good fit for their home instead of going to a breeder.

Overall,  we take on a lot of medical cases, special needs animals, and bottle babies that otherwise would not survive. We work with other organizations and shelters in the area to assist with hoarding cases and to pull animals that are facing possible euthanasia due to a stressful kennel environment.

Our rescue was founded in October of 2018 and since we have been able to rescue, vet, and find families for over 10,000 animals in need!

EXCITING NEWS! We JUST (July 2026) moved into a physical building in Port Huron! This new building is giving us the opportunity to help the community more directly, have a space for meet and greets, office space, and allow volunteer opportunities. We intend to stay mostly foster-based (meaning that the animals will continue to live in foster homes in order to receive the most one-on-one care and interaction and learn to live in a home environment. However, the new facility will allow us to help intake in emergency situations until the animals can be placed with fosters that fit their needs. Additionally, our new facility is giving us a place to store supplies and meet with fosters in order to do vaccines and medical care! The most exciting (in my opinion) part of our new facility is our FELINE ADOPTION CENTER! We have two large rooms set up for adoptable cats to be comfortable and live out of cages where they can meet people - this allows potential adopters to really see their personalities and is helping get cats into loving homes :) This is also a place where people in the community can just come in and spend time with the cats and help to socialize them and get them ready for adoption. It has been an awesome way for us to involve the local CMH (community mental health) and local youth. 

While we're extremely excited about all these new opportunities, this building also means increased costs, so fundraising is even more important.
