PLCA 4 KIDS needs your donation!

This year, PLCA 4 Kids hosted more than 40 children in McCall, Idaho in its daily after school programs introducing children to exciting experiences, activities and enrichment opportunities.

They received science education with hands on activities, interactive exploration and critical thinking in many areas of science. They enjoyed educational assistance giving children and their families the support they need to succeed in school academics. Most importantly on a daily bases PLCA 4 KIDS provides fun!

The strategic plan of the afterschool program is to provide a safe place for the youth to be after school and to prevent them from becoming at risk youth.  At the same time it provides a place where the children can be that the working “parent”, single parent household or parents in general know that their children will be safe and well cared for in a structured, educational setting.  This factor is especially beneficial to the single parent who would otherwise possbly have to leave their children alone while working.

In 2008, a robotics program was started for the fourth graders with two teams.  One of the teams won the sportsmanship and teamwork award at the regional play offs. This factor spurred the youth to play with Legos more often, engaged them in problem solving, and kept them from passively watching television or playing violent videos games.  An indication of the success of this program is that it has continued through the 2014 school year with 12 youth participating.

In addition to the operation of the daily after school program, since 2007 PLCA4Kids has sponsored a series of outdoor recreational events for children aged 5-12 during the summer. Now our programs soar even higher offering arts, crafts, music, science and technology throughout the summer.  For the past several years our group has sponsored the Kids Zone for the McCall 4th of July festivities.  These experiences allow our youth to expand their horizons and knowledge of their immediate surroundings, and to become contributing members of the local community.

The after school programs are centered on the following themes: arts and crafts, science and technology, health and safety, nutrition, recreation and physical education and academic enrichment. A typical day includes outdoor play, a nutritious snack, opportunities for academic assistance, science instruction, and arts and crafts. Field trips have given children opportunities to ice skate, swim, cross country ski, snowshoe and to interact with park rangers at Ponderosa Park.
