Meet Ann.

When Ann gently found an injured Eastern box turtle along the roadside, she wasn’t just helping one animal—she was stepping into her role as a trained wildlife steward and PA Master Naturalist volunteer.

As a Pennsylvania Master Naturalist, Ann has learned about local wildlife, how to monitor local wildlife populations, identify species of conservation concern, and respond appropriately when wildlife needs help in her region. Through her volunteer service, she assists with habitat monitoring, community science projects, educates others, and supports efforts to protect wildlife.

The box turtle she’s holding represents something much bigger.

In PA and locally, habitat fragmentation, vehicle strikes, flooding, and changing climate conditions all impact wildlife. Master Naturalist volunteers are trained to observe, document, and report these trends—providing valuable data to conservation professionals. They also educate neighbors and communities about how to live responsibly with wildlife and protect sensitive habitats.

Wildlife conservation doesn’t happen by accident.
It happens because trained volunteers show up.

Every PA Master Naturalist completes at least 50 hours of intensive training and commits to annual service and continuing education. They become the extra eyes and ears on the landscape—monitoring wildlife, stewarding habitats, and protecting the species that call Pennsylvania home.

But training and supporting these volunteers requires resources.
