Laid in Idaho…Show off your love for California Condors!
Folks living in Idaho have a lot to be proud of from our beautiful landscapes and wild places to our friendly communities, but another huge source of pride is our California Condor breeding program at The Peregrine Fund’s headquarters in Boise. With the largest captive flock of this iconic western species, we produce chicks each year that are released into the wild at Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona or into Southern California. In fact, this year our flock has laid 16 eggs and our first chick hatched at the beginning of April! That’s a lot for Idaho to squawk about!
This is exciting news for a species whose populations once plummeted to only 22 individuals in the entire world.
Today there are more than 250 California Condors flying free and nearly that many in human care to form the breeding population!
Even better, 2015 was the first year to have more California Condors hatched in the wild than fatalities in the wild. While we still have a lot of work to do to secure the future of these magnificent birds, our recent successes show a bright future for the California Condor.
We’re so excited about the future of California Condors that we’re devoting this year’s Idaho Gives campaign to our favorite bald beauties!
Our theme, “Laid in Idaho,” is a fun way to pay homage to the California Condor breeding program in our great state that has paved the way to preserving North America’s largest raptor.
Idaho Gives is a day set aside to support Idaho’s great nonprofits – but you don’t have to live in Idaho to participate!
We need everyone’s help, because your donation made through our Idaho Gives webpage anytime between now and 11:59 p.m. on May 5th will help us to win extra award money.
Just imagine all the great work we can do together to help California Condors regain their title of “Kings of the Western Skies” if everyone were to give that amount or more! Thank you for your support! Make your donation today!
