Prince George's Child Resource Center Inc

Each year the Resource Center provides family support services to over 1,500 families and training to over 3,500 child care providers, parents and human services workers touching the lives of nearly half a million children since 1990.  We do this through home visits, child development education, links to community services, and adult education. But to really see how we can make a difference, see what Karen says about the her experience with the Resource Center in her own words:

"When my child was born I didn’t have the opportunity to study in a classroom situation. This year, I took the initiative to return to the classroom by registering for the afternoon Transitions class at the Family Support Center. I am working hard towards preparing for my GED exams so I can get my high school diploma. I attend class four days a week and my child accompanies me and enjoys her child development class that is preparing her very well for entering pre-school soon. My future goals include attending college and becoming a nurse mid-wife. My biggest dream is to become a doctor with my own practice. I believe the sky’s the limit!

This program has offered me so many opportunities: to prepare for my GED and how to become a better parent. The classes are so helpful because it includes not only how to be a better parent, but how to be aware of the world around us, how to get in touch with ourselves as women, and to appreciate ourselves and work on what we choose to improve. I feel better about myself now, and I believe I can accomplish whatever I want.

My child has learned so much. She speaks more clearly in both Spanish and English. It’s amazing how she sings a lot of different songs and wants to read books with me and her father. My daughter and I really appreciate this opportunity. I want to thank Ms. Marianne Miller, my teacher, in teaching us so patiently and pleasantly; Ms. Danitza Simpson, the Director, for giving me the opportunity to come into the Family Support Center program and study toward my goals; the Child Development staff for their love and excellent care of our kids while we, the parents, focus on our class. I especially want to thank all of you for your support of this program which helps my family and many others have a better opportunity to improve our lives. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
