The opioid addiction epidemic is devastating families and communities up and down the Pioneer Valley. Phoenix House is responding to this challenge with skilled, evidence-based treatment and prevention initiatives dedicated to saving lives and restoring the health and well-being of our communities.

In 2014 alone, 1,289 individuals died of overdoses in Massachusetts, according to the Center for Disease Control, a death toll which has more than doubled since 2008.  While the numbers for last year have yet to be finalized, it is estimated that more than 1,100 lives were lost statewide in the first three-quarters of 2015.  And the epidemic continues unabated.

Nationally, we’re talking about 47,000 overdose deaths a year. And there is little doubt that the death toll continues to rise at an appalling rate all across Massachusetts, New England, and our entire country. It’s almost impossible to meet someone whose life, family, or friend has not been devastated by this deadly enemy.

Phoenix House has responded to this crisis with sweeping changes in the number and scope of our treatment programs. While just a few years ago we treated about 3,500 people a year—men, women and adolescents—today we serve nearly 7,000 people annually, the majority of whom come to us addicted to heroin and other opiates. Phoenix House has the solution to the addiction epidemic:  skilled, compassionate, professional care that is affordable and easily accessed by everyone who lives in the Pioneer Valley.

Also in Massachusetts, Phoenix House responded to a bid request from the Commonwealth, and we opened our newest facility in Quincy in February of 2015. As of March 1, 2016, more than 3,670 individuals passed through our doors in Quincy alone, including many individuals from the Pioneer Valley! In fact, the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Abuse Services has recently reported that, for two quarters in succession, that facility has had the best record in the Commonwealth for placing clients in continuing care.

As the severity of the addictions we treat escalates, our commitment to combating this chronic disease has grown proportionately.  Yet, our facilities and staffs are taxed to the limit. Your support will help Phoenix House meet the demands posed by this deadly epidemic. What’s even more important—your support will help Phoenix House save more lives—right here in the Pioneer Valley.

About Our Community Advisory Board

In the Pioneer Valley, Phoenix House has a strong, active Community Advisory Board which meets quarterly to advise Phoenix House about how best to meet the needs and interests of the four counties served.  With diverse membership reflecting the Valley’s communities, members represent a cross section of the public at large, and provide advice and the perspective of their respective fields of education, law enforcement, the criminal justice system, nonprofit organizations and peer providers—all united in their dedication to the communities in which they live and work.
