In the words of Artistic Director, Karen Azenberg, “Nothing is more important to the long-term vitality of American theatre as an art form than the nurturing of new voices and new work.” To this end, Pioneer Theatre Company has embarked on a new program of staged readings to complement the productions seen on PTC's main stage.
The program, called Play-by-Play, offers emerging playwrights an opportunity to work alongside a professional director and cast for a week-long residency culminating in three public performances. These bare-bones readings give audiences a unique glimpse into the creation and development of a new play. Performances with no sets or costumes let theatre-lovers take a leap of faith and see new work at a very modest cost.
Play-by-Play has already launched new work. The 2014 reading of Alabama Story became a main stage success at PTC in January 2015 and has since been scheduled for additional professional productions across the country. The 2017 reading of "i" will be part of PTC's mainstage season in 2018.
The 2016-17 season of Play-by-Play is underway. The next reading is The Ice Front by local playwright Eric Samuelsen.
