Planting Possibilities

Planting Possibilities’ mission is to improve the possibility of meaningful employment for adults with developmental disabilities by providing supportive job-skills training, employment, or volunteer opportunities in a setting where each individual’s unique abilities can be nurtured and developed.

It is our goal to provide a nurturing environment where intellectually and developmentally disabled adults in Lake County can work toward their own goals of building fulfilling lives through work.

History: Planting Possibilities was founded in 2011. Since the beginning of 2012 we've been strengthening our financial roots, and  have held a number of successful fundraisers including “Diggin’ In,” a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres kickoff event, and have established Spring Flower Sales, “Rockopelli,” a rock concert featuring local bands, as well as a Fall Mum Sale.

Additionally, we've started spreading our roots and successfully grew, maintained, harvested, and marketed nearly one ton of heirloom tomatoes during the 2013 growing season. We've established relationships with local restarants as customers, and shared some of our abundant harvest with the Northwest Indiana Food Depository.

We've recently been blessed with a Legacy Foundation Grant and are currently working on a collaborative greenhouse and educational project with Campagna Academy in Schererville, Indiana. We are active members of the Crossroads, Munster, and Schererville Chamber of Commerce.

Location: We are still looking for about 8-10 acres of land in Lake County, IN. We have a few specific locations in mind, but nothing has been finalized yet. Stay tuned!

We strive to fulfill a need in our community: When young adults with developmental disabilities in Lake County age out of local high school programs at the age of 22, they are often left with very little direction or opportunity.  

Our Vision: Acquire 8-10 acres of land in Lake County to build a greenhouse that will provide employment, job skills training, and volunteer opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community.

Our Future: Our vision includes a greenhouse, gift and garden shop, botanical gardens, event space, and ultimately adjacent supported living accommodations for employees and trainees in need of such arrangements. We are laying the foundation for what we hope will become an important feature of Lake County.
