Teaching civic leadership skills and building engagement capacity makes Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) the right vehicle to ensure that Democracy Includes Everyone!

Your support will:

*   Provide opportunities for PLTI participants to learn and understand how government systems work, how to influence legislation, and how to form alliances to affect change.

*   Guarantee that our community has new and diverse voices at the table when policy decisions are made.

*   Expand proactive civic engagement as PLTI graduates interact with and teach their neighbors and friends how to be more effective advocates.

*   Teach young children, through the Children’s Leadership Training Institute, to apply the same leadership skills in the classroom and playgrounds as their parents apply on boards and committees!

Won't it feel wonderful to know that your support of PLTI will produce the change you want to see: skilled parent and child leaders making our community a better place to live, learn, work and play.

Stories – Stories – Stories! People say we've got great stories to tell, and after ten years of leadership training we have a lot of stories to tell. Please take a moment to watch a few of these stories in our gallery above, featuring graduates as well as our Executive Director. Here are a few other inspiring stories:

*   PLTI parent leader wanted to keep kids healthy. Thanks to the parent leader every student in Alexandria took home a thermometer and tips for keeping kids healthy in 2012. The Washington Post wrote a story about PLTI parent leader Angela Drake's project to reduce the number of days kids miss school by stopping infections from spreading.

*   PLTI parent leader wanted kids to be financially literate.  Her community project on financial literacy called “Money Smart” took on a life of its own becoming a catalyst to the signing of a collaboration agreement between the U.S. Department of Education, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) to teach financial literacy to children. “Money Smart” is now available to high school students thanks to Jennifer Murphy, a PLTI participant and parent leader.

*   A six year old child participant used the skills he learned during the Children's Leadership Training Institute (CLTI) to deliver a speech to the School Board and the City Council during Public Budget Hearings. Think of that: a six year old child leader delivering comments with poise and grace to elected leaders.

Thanks to you, and through the effort of our amazing graduates, PLTI is making a difference in Alexandria.
