At the age of four, Eva was diagnosed with astigmatism, which made it difficult for her to see.  She was screened by Preserve Vision Florida, and a full eye exam was recommended.  Her mother sent us this photo of a very proud Eva, sporting her new glasses and confident that she could see the world clearly.  Now six, Eva is able to learn to read and succeed in school.

Preserve Vision Florida also identified that Jenny had a serious vision issue – amblyopia – that could have led to her losing her eye.  Our follow-up calls prompted her parents to take her to an ophthalmologist who began the therapy to strengthen her eye muscles so her vision was saved.

The PAL School in Bradenton credits Preserve Vision Florida as part of the reason their school went from an “F” to an “A” status.  PVF found that 75% of their students had vision problems, which compromised their ability to read and learn.  Getting glasses for the children greatly increased their classroom attention and reading and math comprehension.

Jenny and Eva aren't alone. One in four children suffers from a vision disability. Getting treatment early is essential. Children whose vision problems go undetected are often frustrated and fatigued in the classroom. These traits can lead to a misdiagnosis of dyslexia or other learning disabilities. Many doctors believe about 80% of children with a learning disability have an undiagnosed vision problem.

Preserve Vision Florida (formerly Prevent Blindness Florida) is a non-profit organization offering 60 years of vision education and services to children and adults throughout Florida. Our focus is promoting a lifetime of healthy vision care through advocacy, education, screenings and research.

Your support helps us provide vision screening, medical eye exams and glasses for children and adults so they can take advantage of all the good things life has to offer.
